Before joining the family business, I did a degree in construction management and subsequently worked as an engineer in the construction industry and then, project management. Although a completely different industry, many of the skills interlink with running a small family business as you need a broad skill set and be able to do everything: making cheese, managing people, sales and hygiene. I had a few years of working with my father as well. He has now retired but is always there to offer advice and support when needed, which is really important as it can be quite isolated and you are working in your own bubble much of the time when running a small rural business.
