Governing Enterprise Architecture: Lessons Learned from Implementing Federal Government EAs

As you travel the hallways of the US State Department these days, you may hear how nation building does not start with democratic elections. Doing democracy right first requires establishing justice through law and order. From this stability, commerce thrives through currency and infrastructure. Both justice and commerce are required before any semblance of a democracy can take root. How does this relate to enterprise architecture (EA), you might ask? Simply put, governance is to enterprise architecture what justice and commerce are to democracy. Without instituting the proper governance structure within your organization, you won't have a chance of establishing architecture-based decisionmaking ― which is the essence of enterprise architecture.
