This issue of Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability focuses on the role of nitrogen (N) in climate forcing. Nitrogen is an essential element for life. The natural nitrogen cycle has been accelerating rapidly by human activities since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and as a result, more reactive nitrogen (Nr) is emitted into the environment. This is causing multiple environmental problems, including eutrophication, acidification, disturbance of tropospheric ozone chemistry and global warming.
