Innovation and greater probability of success in drug discovery and development — from target to biomarkers

The biotechnology industry in general is at a crucial juncture, especially as big pharma is facing arduous challenges that include pricing pressure, adverse public perception, sales erosion by generic drugs, reduced research and development productivity, increased time for drug development, increased attrition rates of drugs in development, possibly higher regulatory hurdles and an exponential increase in the costs of bringing a drug to market. An adverse big pharma environment has clear and logical flow-on to the larger biotechnology industry, because of the tremendous interrelatedness of the two. Hence, pharma and biotech together must continue to focus on innovation and productivity as two important features necessary to meet the huge challenges faced by these industries.
