摘要

The Awkward Spaces of Fathering calls into question the under-developed state of theorization and research about 'fathering' within human geography through returning to questions raised by Stuart Aitken's prior studies of fathers and giving voice to the 'man as father'. Multi-disciplinary in its appeal, the book incorporates Aitken's long-standing interests in families, communities, emotional geographies, post-structural methodologies and film. The opening chapter introduces Aitken's arguments and presents the case for theoretical and methodological experimentation in order to better understand the everyday work that fathering entails. Ambitious in his aims, Aitken seeks to reject and replace 'institutional constructions of fatherhood', investigate the 'facts of fathering' through spatial frames, and to celebrate the emotional, everyday, embodied experiences of fathering.
