"Most railroaders never said David Connell in response to a question about what's sustained his many years in the business. His response could have been an attempt to paint himself as ordinary among his peers. But the RTA thinks differently and has singled Connell out to receive this year's Branding Hammer award. Connell is vice president of engineering at Union Pacific Railroad, a title he's held since 2008. But he first felt the thrill of railroads and all they encompass as a toddler. "Railroading gets in your blood early," he said. "I can clearly remember to this day my grandmother taking me to watch passenger trains coming in on the Seaboard Air Line Railway when I was about 4 years old. I remember being so excited by the massiveness of the train and how it seemed to move so effortlessly."
