Adopting a functional-cognitive perspective of Halliday's transitivity model, this article examines the processes of ideological constructions within The New York Times and China Daily in their reports of an air collision between the USA and China in April 2001. The analysis shows that discourses surrounding the collision circulating in the two newspapers construct different understandings of the event which are shaped by the specific political position, interests, and priorities of each government regarding the collision. Through analyzing specific choices of process types and participant roles made by each newspaper and the cognitive effects that these choices have on the reader, this article argues that transitivity analysis shares similar goals and assumptions with cognitively oriented views of language.
