Remembering Sputnik 40 Years Later

Ten years ago, cosmonauts aboard the Mir space station commemorated the 40th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik 1 in a very special way—by hand-launching a scale model of the satellite. Transmitting this time on the amateur bands, it was variously known as Sputnik 40 and RS-17. Another scale model, RS-18, was hand-launched in 1998.
