Meet New People, Renew Friendships, Learn New Things - It's a Technical Conference

I have written about the concept of continuous learning in various forms over the last several years (see the article mentioned in the References section). This is something important to me, and I think it should be something important for everyone, no matter what your situation or status may be. Working or retired, student or graduate, you can benefit by staying curious. Even ham radio can create multiple opportunities to learn something new, meet new friends, and renew acquaintances - on or off the air. Last October, one of my favorite amateur radio technical conferences came up in the schedule: The Microwave Update, or MUD. This American Radio Relay League-sponsored conference happens every year, in various places around the U.S. The 2015 event took place in San Diego, California, hosted by the San Bernardino Microwave Society (SBMS), of which I am a member. MUD is a very specialized conference, since the audience specializes in experimenting, building, modifying, and operating on the micrometer and millimeter wave frequency bands. Still, more than 70 people attended the event, coming from all over California plus 13 other states, Australia, and Japan.
