For many years, the incineration of sewage sludges in special incineration plants has been a well-established method. With an ever-increasing demand for thermal treatment capacities, new trends have occurred in the last few years - gasification as well as co-incineration of sewage sludge now takes place on a very large scale. Amongst the various options, i.e. co-incineration in incineration plants, cement factories, or coal-fired power stations, the latter has recently experienced the highest growth rates. From 2004 onward, co-incineration in lignite-fired and hard-coal-fired power plants will account for more than 50 % of the total capacities that are available for thermal treatment of sewage sludges.
