When we talked to the country's top mechanicals last year, many of them were complaining. This year many of them are pointing to new projects coming on line in their markets. The past year was a wild ride and some big players crashed and burned. Scott Co. of California, No. 22 on last year's list, is out of business. American Plumbing & Mechanical, No. 7 in 2003, is in bankruptcy. Some utilities discovered that contracting is a tough business. Exelon Corp. has put its mechanicals up for sale. Northwestern Corp. is selling off Blue Dot companies. PSEG Energy Technologies has plunged from No. 15 and $378 million in revenue to No. 65 and $68 million. It announced that its mechanical businesses are for sale.
