John Ward was broke in 1992, and then he met Frank Blau. Ward took Blau's flat rate gospel to heart and he has turned Applewood Plumbing, Heating & Electric into one of the most profitable and philanthropically minded contractors in the country. The accolades have been pouring in. Applewood was recently honored as the 2009 Large Business winner in the Denver Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Trust. It gives away $1,000 a month to small local charities. Ward is one of the founders of the Nexstar Network Legacy Foundation, which gives scholarships to students who wantrnto pursue a career in the plumbing-heating-cooling or electrical trades.
