Negotiations for a new labour contract between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) on the US West Coast and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) were ongoing as Container Shipping & Trade went to press, after the existing contract expired on 1 July. At the time of the expiry of the six-year coast-wide labour contract - covering nearly 20,000 dockworkers at 29 West Coast ports - a joint statement from the PMA and the ILWU said: "While there will be no contract extension, cargo will keep moving, and normal operations will continue at the ports until an agreement can be reached."
