Interschalt Maritime Systems has secured a contract to supply its StowMan software and Seacos MACS3 loading computers on container ships operated by Zim Integrated Shipping Services. The agreement will see the stowage planning software and loading computers deployed on up to 93 vessels in the Zim fleet. StowMan enables stowage planners to generate multiple optimised stowage plans for a ship. It takes into account all criteria relevant for the safe and effective stowage of containers - the container size, crane capacity, segregation of dangerous goods, and reefer container plug-ins. It also accounts for the optimum trim of a container ship to reduce bunker costs. Zim chief operating officer David Arbel said using StowMan reduces port laytimes. "Operating StowMan together with the MACS3 loading computer, we see a realistic possibility to optimise the capacity utilisation of our ships - both on board and at terminals, taking into account safety criteria as well as the economic aspects," he said. "We are able to plan different stowage scenarios according to various criteria, in order for us to decide on the optimum plan with maximum capacity utilisation." Interschalt said other container ship operators were seeing the benefits of using the software. CMA CGM and the United Arab Shipping Co also use StowMan, bringing the total number of vessels the stowage planning software has been deployed on up to 600, including the Zim fleet.
