A third of box ship fleet at scrap value

VesselsValue has compared the daily market value of every container vessel against what it could be sold for as scrap (the Idt of the vessel multiplied by the daily steel price), to reveal that a huge number of box ships - 2,018 - are at scrap value, compared to 2,820 vessels with a value above this. The average scrapping age is 17 years. Of all the container ship types, Panamax vessels are the most likely to have a market value that is the same as or below their scrap value. 86 per cent of the Panamax fleet are potential scrap candidates.
