A research prototype for a 90 Mb/s component codec and line multiplexer/demultiplexer has been built to study the practical problems associated with its design and to demonstrate its use in a high-bandwidth, fiber-guide environment. The codec has substantially better than NTSC quality since NTSC artifacts are not present, and chrominance as well as luminance bandwidths exceed that of the composite picture that is currently delivered to the home. The multiplexer, demultiplexer, and clock recovery circuitry have been realized. Three channels can be asynchronously multiplexed up to the fourth-order CCITT rate of 139.264 MHz. Each channel can carry either video/audio information or a DS3 channel. In the present system, two of the channels are used to carry the total signal and the third channel is unoccupied.
