Observers have been wondering how long Wolseley would take to flex its muscles in tool hire following its purchase of Brandon Hire last year. Its aim of opening a huge number of Brandon outlets either within or next to its other brands, such as Build Center and Plumb Center, is a strategy distinct from its rivals but one that makes a lot of sense for the rapidly expanding group. This policy of 'embedding' branches allows Brandon to get its wares in front of a large number of customers at a fraction of the investment of opening a separate branch, saving the costs of infrastructure and sharing some staff and resources.
