A third of HSE notices go to only three big firms

Just three firms are reported to have taken nearly a third of all the enforcement notices handed out to the UK's Top 100 contractors so far this year. Of the 76 prohibition and improvement notices reported by the Health & Safety Executive on its database in 2007,24 have been shared between Sir Robert McAlpine, Laing O'Rourke and Ardmore. HSE records show Sir Robert McAlpine was hit by nine prohibition notices while Laing O'Rourke is reported to have received five along with four improvement notices. A Laing O'Rourke spokesman disputed the figures. He said: "The data is flawed. Anything more than a cursory examination will show double counting and, in one case, triple counting."
