Is this the start of something big?

Bovis Lend Lease has taken a bold step by unveiling its sustainability targets. It plans to hit all of these in the next three years. In contrast, Government targets won't be unveiled until next spring at the earliest. It's a big move to ask clients to adhere to the targets - what happens if they won't? - but it is a good one. Everybody, from both ends of the supply chain, needs to be involved in an initiative like this for it to have any chance of working. Subcontractors will be easier to persuade to adopt the practice and Bovis's newly introduced Building Confidence scheme for tier one suppliers means they will be asked to fall into line pretty quickly. Bovis's challenge is how it is going to meet such tough targets. There is a fine line between ambitious and unrealistic but this may be the start of the largest players in the industry signing up to stretch themselves in cutting carbon.
