By and large, the responsibility to train people in the safe use of construction equipment rests with contractors, not with their suppliers. But today's focus on health and safety is pushing the hire industry to provide contractors with a more rounded service, which extends to providing its customers with training and even identifying gaps in the market for new courses. HSS branch director David Downie says training goes beyond making sure tools are used safely - it even affects the contractor's bottom line. "Legislation is driving training into the industry. If someone is injured, contractors want know they're covered," he says. "But that's not the only aspect of training that matters to customers.
