Logistically, the Shugborough viaduct posed some very difficult problems for subcontractor JFE Attridge Scaffolding Services. There was no access for vehicles within 100 m of the viaduct as the area is prone to flooding with the River Trent being fast flowing. The firm's experience from similar projects meant consultation with the main contractor, Network Rail, and the Environmental Authority went smoothly and the proposed scaffold scheme was agreed. The timescale was critical - no additional closures of the rail line could be arranged as the viaduct carried the West Coast Mainline.
