Sainsbury's will spend up to £900 million building, refitting and extending stores in 2010 -sustaining its capital expenditure despite the economic climate.rnThe UK's third biggest supermarket, which is celebrating its 140th anniversary, revealed plans to spend "between £800m and £900m" next year, following capital expenditure of £863m this year and£850m in 2008.rnIn contrast, Tesco said last month its outlay would reduce substantially over the coming year, from £4.7 billion to £3.5bn.rnSainsbuiy's announcement followed a better-than-expected 11.3 per cent hike in annual profits, to £543m for the year to 21 March. The group said it now wanted to add a further 5 per cent of floor space to its portfolio in the coming 12 months. Half of the growth is to come from new stores, the other half from extensions.
