摘要

The industry is a quarter of the way towards making the savings the government wants. Construction minister Mark Prisk is so pleased that he's proudly spreading the news. Good for him. It's no mean feat to cut costs in the face of adversity, and it's a ringing endorsement of the industry that he is holding up construction firms as leading the way in their approach to finding savings (page 2). The next thing we need is to see how this 5 per cent has been calculated - neither the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills nor the Cabinet Office have so far been able to tell us. Assuming these are the quick wins, transparency is essential. We need to see exactly which costs have been cut, that the savings genuinely represent more for less rather than less for less.
