Employers must invest in our industry's future skills

The report by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills that highlighted a 2 percent drop in apprenticeship starts in the past year was not a surprise (CN, 7 July). But that does not mean it is any less disappointing. The recession has hit the construction industry hard: our research shows that more than a quarter of construction businesses in the UK reduced their training activity in 2010, and 18 percent plan to scale back training even further this year.
