BIM and the fully integrated future

Building information modelling isn't really about the software, although it often gets talked about in those terms.The IT directors of big companies may be the evangelists but fulfilling BIM's potential is less to do with technology than about the relationships between companies and their own internal processes. One of the key challenges that comes out of the BIM strategy published earlier this week is the focus on the contractual challenges companies face in trying to work together in this way (see news, page 6). Issues such as insurance, intellectual property and ownership of data become complex but the perception that arrangements have to be totally transformed for so called 'level 2' BIM is probably exaggerated.
