A raft of large-scale rail extension and improvement schemes over the past year has given contractors plenty to sink their teeth into. Crossrail.the extension of the East London Line and the Blackfriars Station development may have kept attention focused on work in the capital, but it was the rebuild of a collapsed rail tunnel in a small Buckinghamshire village that claimed a major infrastructure award last month. Engineering, construction and technical services provider URS/Scott Wilson took the top prize in the 'infrastructure (large company)' category at the ACE Engineering Excellence Awards with its rebuild of the Gerrards Cross rail tunnel - the second consecutive year it has claimed the title.
