For a long time the recommendations set up by the commission internationale De L'eclairage CIE have been the starting point for the design of lighting installations in traffic tunnels. These recommendations are based on the most unfavourable lighting conditions, which are still important in practice. Furthermore they are aimed at giving a considerable amount of driving comfort. The requirements which are put on the basis of these recommendations for a lighting installation are high, even higher than is necessary in practice. Not only practical experience, but also considerations of cost savings, and energy conservation, and modified opinions as regards driving comfort are a reason for reconsidering the requirements for tunnel lighting, and in particular for tunnel entrances. This report presents a problem analysis and a literature review is made, which gives the report the character of a book of reference in this field of research.
