Britain needs an estimated 230,000 homes a year to meet demand, but annual housing starts reached only 98,250 in the 12 months to December 2011 - down 4 per cent on the previous year. While starts in England jumped 18 per cent in Q3 2012 to 25,670, they are down 3 per cent annually. Council housing budgets meanwhile are set to rebound by almost 30 per cent next year, according to exclusive CN research. The housebuilding budget for local authorities in England that built houses in 2011/12 is set to rise from ￡65m in the current financial year to ￡83.4m in 2013/14 - a 28.2 per cent increase.
