Although it now sits by itself some eight miles off the coast at Portsmouth, the Nab Tower was initially intended to have seven siblings as part of an elaborate and costly plan to stretch anti-submarine nets across the English Channel. By the time the 1918 armistice was signed to end the First World War, only two of the eight towers had been built.
