Balls hits out at 'cheerleader' chancellor

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has launched a fresh offensive over High Speed 2, accusing the Treasury of "losing control" and chancellor George Osborne of acting like a "cheerleader" for the divisive scheme. Speaking to Construction News, Mr Balls said Labour supported a new North-South line and would take the project forward "if it was the right thing to do" but added that the government had to get costs under control. He said: "I think rather belatedly David Cameron has realised he has got to get a grip [on HS2] because the Treasury and [Department for] Transport have lost control over this project."
