On the outskirts of the Merseyside town of Kirkby, just a few miles north-east of Liverpool, a new waste transfer facility is being built that will see residual waste from across the region packed into trains and transported across the country to a treatment facility on Teesside. The waste material will be brought into the transfer station by road in lorries before being discharged, packed into containers and lifted onto the back of rail bogies for the crosscountry trip to the east coast.
