Deconstruction of Grenfell 'must begin by next May'

Engineers have advised that the deconstruction of Grenfell Tower in west London should begin by next May. In a summary of recommendations drawn up by Atkins and commissioned by the government, the firm said that advice from technical experts and engineers was "based on protecting the safety of those working in and living around the tower". Damage from the fire, which killed 72 people on 14 June 2017, as well as the deterioration of the exposed structure, particularly the steel reinforcements, has made it impossible to save the building, the engineers said. New propping is set to be installed to strengthen the structure, but this is not a medium or long-term solution, they added.
