In October 2010, a hungarian dyke which protected small communities from a waste-reservoir filled with run-off from an aluminium refinery broke, unleashing a flood of hazardous toxic waste, dubbed "red mud", onto parts of the nearby villages. Modern GPS technology from Topcon combined with satellite images supplied a good overview of the disaster area for both the local people and for the government. With Topcon's portable GRS-1 dual constellation network-enabled RTK rover system the whole toxic area and the deformation of the dyke could be surveyed precisely and rapidly.
