Saudi Arabian authorities have awarded a SAR30.8 billion (€6.4 billion) contract for the second phase of the Haramain high speed rail project to Saudi-Spanish rail consortium Al Shoula. The 450km Haramain project is a high-speed passenger link for pilgrims between Jeddah and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. This contract is for the second phase of construction which involves track laying, electrification, operations and a 12-year maintenance period.
