Just over six months into the role of president and chairman of the managing board of Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) - HCME -it must seem a busy time for Makoto Yamazawa, but with global political and economic uncertainty as well as the launch of the latest excavators and wheeled loaders, he is happy to look at the positive side. He has worked for Hitachi for many years - in fact, he started as sales representative for the company's domestic business in 1983. He has had roles in Thailand and Malaysia, and has various jobs in the Tokyo head office. He has been in the mining world in several of these positions, including his most recent post, but from 2002 to 2004, he was in the construction department. He has started in Europe at an interesting time.
