A large number of telescopic-boom material handlers in service today are rented units. Construction Equipment's 1999 Universe of Construction Equipment and Machinery reports that the population of rough-terrain telescopic handlers on American jobsites increased 40 percent from 1994 through 1999, with the number of new rental units growing 117 percent. Most of the new machines placed in service during this four-year period went into rental-center fleets.
