We'd never before used a theodolite, an optical instrument for measuring horizontal and vertical angles, So when CE recently visited Trimble's Engineering & Construction Division, formerly Spectra Precision, in Dayton, Ohio, product specialist Marty Tracy patiently explained the basics.rnShe first helped us position the instrument over a known reference point (hub) and level it, then showed us how to use it to establish reference points for an imaginary building foundation, (Since the weather was frigid during our early December visit, we were actually laying out this "foundation" in a nearby heated warehouse.)
