The Brown Hoisting & Conveying Machinery Co. was founded in Cleveland in 1880. By 1900, it had been renamed The Brown Hoisting Machinery Co. Using the Brownhoist trade name, the firm initially manufactured a line of innovative machinery for unloading bulk cargo from ships at Great Lakes ports. Locomotive cranes were added to its product line in the mid-1890s, and in 1919 a dragline bucket was added as an accessory for these cranes. Some details of this bucket's origin are unknown, but it was patented by one Mr. Shnable (or, in some other sources, Schnable), a former partner of John W. Page.
