The construction industry lags on technology integration, but that will change. In fact, according to Topcon CEO Ray O'Connor, the industry is at the tipping point. Digital site-management systems allow collaboration and communication between all disciplines of the construction process, and Topcon cites a McKinsey Institute report that suggests the use of technology in construction will cut the costs needed to sustain and improve global infrastructure by up to two-thirds by 2030. Construction equipment builds infrastructure, so machine technology is critical if site-management systems are to accomplish the promised efficiencies. Partnerships between equipment manufacturers and technology suppliers have accelerated the penetration of digitally enhanced equipment. Japan, Germany, and the UK mandate that projects implement intelligent construction technologies; it will occur by 2020 in Japan.
