Caterpillar, at present, has more than 70 autonomous trucks working in mining operations worldwide, and a recent agreement with Fortescue Metals Group will significantly expand that figure. Fortes-cue, operating iron-ore mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, plans to add a number of new Cat 793F autonomous trucks to its operation, along with converting nearly 100 Cat 793F, Cat 789D, and Komatsu 930E conventional haulers to autonomous operation. "Caterpillar is pleased to build on the success we have had working with Fortescue to implement autonomous mining solutions," says Jean Savage, Caterpillar VP with responsibility for the Surface Mining & Technology Division. "We look forward to growing the MineStar suite of technology products throughout Fortescue's operations and working with them to drive process efficiency, increase productivity, lower cost per ton, and enhance safety."
