摘要

Microscopic analysis of brick masonry work which can provide valuable information on the mineralogical composition and microstructure of the masonry work, is essential for reliable diagnosis of several forms of deterioration and may be useful for predicting the durability. Over the past three decades, the application of microscopy to the study of building materials has increased worldwide. This has contributed considerably to the understanding of several fundamental problems associated with, among others, hardened concrete and brick masonry. Today, problems such as sulfate attack, acid attack, damage due to fire, improper mixing and compaction, poor choice of materials and many more, which previously could not easily be resolved, can now be properly diagnosed with the aid of microscopy. From the macro-level, through to the micro-level and the nano-level, the composition and internal structure of several stony building materials can be studied. This paper deals with a brief overview of the capabilities, the possibilities and limitations in the use of microscopy for diagnosing a number of forms of deterioration of brick masonry.
