NTT readies to go abroad

Japan's government plans to give up its title as majority owner of NTT—the former state-owned monopoly that is the world's largest telecom company—in a stock sale this fall that could generate more than $12 billion in revenue. In another move that could ease NTT's ability to make telecom acquisitions in the U.S., a Japanese trade panel reportedly is asking the government to restructure NTT for the second time in less than two years. One of the recommendations calls for the Japanese government to make NTT DoCoMo—NTT's wireless arm—an independent company.
