Nortel Networks made an anticipated Wi-Fi wireless LAN strategy announcement last week that puts it among the hotly competitive markets for Wi-Fi access points and security switches, while also giving the vendor a stake in the embryonic market for voice over wireless LANs. Just days after the Wireless 2003 show, at which Wi-Fi was both lauded and lambasted, Nortel launched its WLAN 2200 product family―a line of four products that include a dual-mode 802.11a/b access point, a mobile software voice client capable of wireless IP telephony on PDAs, a wireless LAN security switch and a Wi-Fi mobile adapter for laptop PCs.
