Conflicting labelling rules

Anxiety is growing in the European Union (EU) confectionery industry that the UK's proposed front-of-pack colour coded labelling scheme could upset the EU market by distorting competition and undermining Europe's much vaunted common market. The UK government's Department of Health is to bring in nutrition labelling rules by this summer that will give prominent billing to the level of fat, saturated fat, salt, sugar and calories in confectionery and other food products. Details are still being worked on with companies and others but the system is likely to include plans for 'traffic light' indicators of the kind that have been strongly rejected by a number of other EU countries, most notably Germany.
