A road bridge in Cumbria which blends naturally into the landscape has been voted the Best Civil Engineering Structure of the Century by readers of CONCRETE magazine. At the heart of the Lake District is Greta Bridge, a key link on the A66 Keswick Northern Bypass between Penrith and Workington. Chamfered edges and curved soffits provide the 220m long post-tensioned concrete structure with a dramatic and unique look that complements the rugged landscape. The bridge has received much praise since construction began in 1974, receiving a High Commendation in The Concrete Society awards of 1977. In November 1999 the bridge received its finest accolade when readers of CONCRETE voted it the 'Best Civil Engineering Structure of the Century'.
