Glass-fibre-reinforced concrete (GRC) is described here as the most complex material widely used in current construction practice. Its development exploited an ancient principle of converting naturally brittle materials into tougher and more useful ones through the incorporation of strong fibres. It is an unusual composite however, in which both the matrix and the reinforcement themselves are composites.
