Refurbishment of secondary gas storage tank containment Isle of Grain

The concrete bund wall around a liquid gas storage container plays a very important safety role by delivering secondary containment for the steel tank, thereby preventing the liquid gas from escaping if the steel should be compromised for any reason. Maintaining the bund's strength and integrity is vital, and refurbishment of the secondary containment requires an equally safety-conscious approach to detensioning the existing restraints and upgrading the bund. National Grid's 50,000m~3 capacity liquid gas storage tank at Isle of Grain was commissioned in 1981. The reinforced concrete bund wall that surrounds it is 19.5m high, with a diameter of 63m and a concrete thickness of up to 520mm.
