A COMBINATION of industrial and marine conditions presents one of the most corrosive environments known, precisely the situation facing the Manx Gas LPG storage depot at Douglas Harbour, Isle of man, particularly as the prevailing winds can carry salt spray up to 3km inland. When it came to refurbishing the steel storage tanks recently, the gas utility company wanted the best protective coatings system available.The system chosen was supplied by independent British decorative and protective paint manufacturer Bradite through its local distributor Ashcrofts. The hard-wearing, anti-corrosive specification comprised Bradite's surface-tolerant epoxy primer and its high-performance silicone-alkyd coating system, formulated specifically to withstand harsh marine and industrial atmospheric exposure. The anticipated design time to first maintenance is 10 years, minimizing repainting concerns and costs for Manx Gas.
