The project, which is currently under construction, comprises a dual two-lane carriageway approximately 1.8km long, with cycle track and footpath crossing Junk Bay in Hong Kong. When completed it will relieve the busy traffic currently using the existing Tseung Kwan O Tunnel and the connecting road network and will divert industrial traffic away from the town centre thus improving the living environment of residential areas. The main contractor of the project is China Road and Bridge Corporation, who appointed Meinhardt-Hewson joint venture to propose and develop design solutions for the precast concrete pile cap shells. Precast concrete shells can act as permanent formwork for in-situ marine pile caps, enabling the construction to be undertaken in a safe, dry and tide-free environment. Their use eliminates the need to drive temporary sheet-piles into the ecologically sensitive seabed, which thus reduces the site labour working over water, with the additional benefit of shortening the construction period. The watertight methods used in Hong Kong on other marine projects are complicated and can be considered unsafe for operatives. The watertight measures used in this project have the benefits of ease of construction and providing a safe environment without the need for underwater works performed by divers.
