Hopes that the usual autumnal increase in activity would stabilise and firm up the containership charter market were totally shattered on September 11. The global political and economic uncertainty resulting from the terrorist attacks in the US destroyed all hope of any immediate impetus to world and cargo volumes. In the charter market, charterers were very restrained and only concluded business that needed to be done at the time. Ocean carriers were kept very busy dealing with the rocketing war risk premiums that were quoted immediately after the attack, and which also forced some feeder lines to reduce or change their ports of call (see 'Running for cover' pp77-79).
